Sell a Classic Toyota 4Runner, 1984–1989

The first-generation 4Runner is the Toyota pickup's sibling — same truck underneath, a removable top on top — and we buy it with the same enthusiasm, four-wheel drive first.

The pickup's sibling, with the top off

The 1984 to 1989 4Runner is, underneath, the classic Toyota pickup: same frame, same drivetrains, same reputation for lasting. What it adds is a back seat and a removable fibreglass top over the cargo area — the feature that makes a first-generation 4Runner unmistakable and the reason collectors name these years specifically. That arrangement never changed across the run: fixed over the front seats, and the fibreglass top removable over the rear on every truck, 1984 through 1989.

That sibling relationship matters for sellers: everything said about old Toyota pickups on the classic Toyota pickup page applies here too, under the same rules as our classic Toyota page and our classic car hub. If your 4Runner is complete and solid, it is a car we want to see.

Four-wheel drive first, top hardware complete

Four-wheel drive is the specification that matters most on a 4Runner — it is the first thing we look for, as on every classic truck and SUV here. A 4x4 first-generation 4Runner in complete, solid condition is a strong truck; a two-wheel-drive example is still bought, at a level that reflects the specification honestly.

The top and its hardware are major parts on this truck, not accessories. A 4Runner with its top present — even in rough shape — is a complete car; one missing its top is missing a defining part, and that changes the inspection. Tell us honestly whether the top and its mounting hardware are with the truck before we visit.

Condition, completeness, and selling yours

First-generation 4Runners were used hard — beach trucks, desert trucks, family trucks — and most show it: faded paint, worn interiors, high miles, a bed area that has carried everything. All of that is ordinary condition, priced in. What matters is completeness — engine, transmission, top, glass, trim, and interior present — and a body and frame that are not rusted through.

A complete 4Runner that does not run, even with a genuinely failed engine, can be bought, because these pre-computer drivetrains can be overhauled. We inspect it where it sits in Orange County, pay at pickup if you accept, and tow it free.

Classic seller questions

Which first-generation 4Runners are most wanted?

Four-wheel-drive trucks first, and the 1984 and 1985 trucks are the ones collectors chase hardest — the solid-front-axle years, with 1985 adding fuel injection. Any 1984 to 1989 truck that is complete and solid is wanted, though.

My 4Runner is missing its top. Can you buy it?

The top is a major, defining part, so its absence changes the inspection significantly and may make the truck incomplete in our terms. Tell us exactly what is missing before we visit and we will be straight about it.

Is a two-wheel-drive 4Runner wanted?

Yes, at a level that reflects the specification. Four-wheel drive is always prioritised, but a complete, solid two-wheel-drive truck is still bought.

My 4Runner does not run. Will you buy it?

If it is complete, yes — even with a dead engine. An incomplete truck, missing major parts, or one rusted through is the honest exception.
